Asphalt Reclamation Services in Virginia & Maryland
What Are the Benefits of Asphalt Milling?
Milling is a budget-friendly way to maintain or repair existing asphalt. It is also quicker than excavation, removal, and installation.
When pavement is resurfaced, usually only the top layer of asphalt is replaced. This is known as cold milling or asphalt milling which involves the removal of only a few inches of existing asphalt to get rid of any surface-level damage, deterioration, or irregularities.
The Process
Preparation
We prepare the area to be resurfaced, which can involve removing obstacles, cleaning the surface, and assessing the condition of the existing pavement.
Milling
Our asphalt paving contractors use milling machines to remove the top layer of the existing asphalt. This milling process grinds the old, damaged asphalt, and the material is typically recycled for use in new asphalt.
Surface Repair
After milling, we repair any damage or irregularities in the subgrade (the layer of material beneath the asphalt) to create a stable foundation for the new asphalt.
Application
We apply a fresh layer of hot asphalt to the prepared subgrade. We compact this new layer to create a smooth, even surface.
Finishing & Marking
We add any necessary finishing touches, like line striping and road markings, to the newly resurfaced pavement.
By resurfacing only the top layer, rather than completely reconstructing the road or pavement, this approach can be more cost-effective and less disruptive to traffic. It extends the life of the pavement and provides a smoother driving surface.
What Is Full Depth Reclamation?
Full-depth reclamation establishes a stronger foundational layer upon which fresh asphalt can be applied. This approach reduces operational expenses by eliminating the need for the excavation and removal of old asphalt.
The Process
Grind & Blend
We pulverize and combine the leftover material and any soil and aggregates underneath it to strengthen the foundation for a fresh layer.
