Thermoplastic Line Striping Services in Maryland, Virginia, & D.C.

What is Thermoplastic Line Striping?

Ever driven around a parking lot to find a spot, but the markings are so worn that it becomes impossible? Imagine your customers in the same position. But don’t worry, there is an effective solution to keep traffic flowing smoothly and safely: thermoplastic line striping.

Thermoplastic line striping is a unique pavement marking method that utilizes a dry powder mix comprising various resins, fillers, and glass beads. These are then heated to create pavement striping and markings. Unlike traditional paint, thermoplastic line striping is clearer and lasts longer.

How is Thermoplastic Traffic Paint Applied?

With thermoplastic line striping’s unique versatility, you may be wondering how this material is applied to pavement.

The process is not all that complicated. The application process breaks down like so:

Dominion Paving Number 1 Icon

Our striping contractors prepare the asphalt surface for proper bonding (cleaning off debris, etc)

Dominion Paving Number 2 Icon

The thermoplastic paint is heated to extremely high temperatures (between 400 and 450 degrees)

Dominion Paving Number 3 Icon

Once the ideal temperature is met, the paint will be applied directly onto the pavement surface through an extruder machine

The material then cures through releasing heat, slowly reverting to a solid form as it bonds to the asphalt surface

Heating the Material

Utilizing a specialized kettle, Dominion Paving & Sealing, heats the thermoplastic material to a minimum of 400 degrees.

Preparing for Application

Once the material has melted fully, our contractors load the thermoplastic into a state-of-the-art extruder or sprayer. These tools allow us to efficiently and effectively shape the requested markings and stripes.

Apply Pavement Markings

Thermoplastic is then extruded or sprayed onto the paved surfaces, forming the requested shapes or markings. The material cools and solidifies in a durable bond to the surface. Once fully cured, it results in clear, highly visible, and long-lasting pavement markings.

Key Benefits of Preformed Thermoplastic Markings

As the owner of a commercial space, keeping your area a safe place for drivers and pedestrians comes with a lot of factors.

From clear parking spots and visible signage to specified ADA markings, thermoplastic line striping offers practical and long-lasting solutions to ensure a safe and smooth operation.

Many other business owners are making the switch to thermoplastic line striping and road markings, and it’s plain to see why:

Asphalt Line Striping FAQs

1) What is thermoplastic line striping?

Thermoplastic line striping is a pavement marking method that utilizes a specialized heated material to create clearly defined, long-lasting traffic markings on paved surfaces.

2) How long does thermoplastic striping last?

When thermoplastic striping is installed correctly, the new pavement markings will last on average five to seven years, if not more. The lifespan of the markings will depend on factors such as the weather conditions and traffic volume.

3) Can thermoplastic be applied to any surface?

While thermoplastic can be applied to surfaces like concrete, it is best used with asphalt. Concrete requires more surface preparation to guarantee enough adhesion.

Asphalt, however, bonds the best with thermoplastic, resulting in more precise markings and long-lasting durability.

4) Is thermoplastic environmentally friendly?

Yes, thermoplastic is considered environmentally friendly because it contains fewer harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and exhibits high reusability through heating and molding multiple times without affecting its surface.

Additionally, the material’s longer lifespan requires less repainting, thereby reducing waste and energy consumption.
